Unconditional Love

GOD is LOVE and His love is unconditional!

1 John 4:19 We Love, because He first loved us.

Unconditional love is the act of loving someone freely and without conditions or expectations. It means accepting another person as they are, including their flaws and mistakes, without judgment. It is a selfless form of love that does not demand repayment.

Key characteristics

  • Selfless and unselfish: Unconditional love means wanting another person to be happy for their own sake, not for any benefit you might receive in return.

  • Accepting and forgiving: It involves offering acceptance and forgiveness, even when the other person makes choices that are difficult or cause pain. Your love remains, even if the relationship must change.

  • Secure: A sense of unconditional love provides a feeling of security, fostering independence and self-worth in the people who receive it. It gives them the confidence that they are loved and will not be abandoned.

Most people are unfamiliar with or do not comprehend this type of love because we are born into a world filled with sin, where selfishness is inherent. I neither knew nor understood it initially. It took me some time to comprehend and embrace it in my life. I had to come to terms with the idea that God not only loves but is Love itself. He embodies the very essence of Love.

Before God introduced my spiritual parents into my life, all the love I had known was conditional. I worked hard to make my parents proud, but I continually fell short. I consistently sensed their disappointment and disapproval towards me.

When I first started my relationship with God, I was really worried about messing up and disappointing Him, thinking He might stop loving me or leave me as my mother had. I put in a lot of effort to try and earn His love. Back then, I didn't really get what true love was or that He actually is Love.

My past hurts, wounds, and trauma influenced this. They caused my perception to be filtered through previous experiences and situations, preventing me from seeing the truth about God or myself.

Understanding and embracing God's love initiated the healing process in my life, a journey that continues today. I came to realize that I was accepted exactly as I was; however, He didn't intend to leave me unchanged, as He had greater plans for me.

Jerimiah 29:11For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

This also initiated a journey of discovering my true identity; I wasn't merely what the world shaped me into, nor what trauma, hurt, and pain molded me to be. My past no longer defined who I was. I no longer had to carry shame, embarrassment, and self-hatred. I found freedom in God's love and began to love myself.

One of my greatest desire is to let His unconditional love flow through me to others and pay it forward. Love is the solution or the key to life. However, it's not the conditional love that many associate with the concept of love; it's the unconditional love of God that He bestows upon us so we can share it with others. This love has the power to transform lives, just as it transformed mine.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.
